Implement Localization Tools for Your Company’s Success

Leveraging different language and industry resources improves productivity in translation. There are many tools currently available that can drastically increase ROI and improve the allocation of financial resources within a company. Some of the most crucial resources for success in the translation industry include: 1) Terminology Management (Termbase -TB), 2) Translation Memory (TM), Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools, and Translation Management System (TMS).

Terminology Management (Termbase-TB)

Terminology Management is rapidly becoming an industry standard. By managing the meaning and translation of relevant terms companies are able to produce more efficient and higher quality translations. In a recent Common Sense Advisory Report, The Case for Terminology Management, Nataly Kelly summarized, “The report confirms our previous findings which show that terminology is a fundamental piece of the global content management lifecycle. Further, companies that invest in terminology management save money down the line due to decreased translation project costs, as well as less time spent clarifying ambiguous terms and making corrections.” Although TM can seem like a tedious process which requires a lot of front-loading in the beginning, the payoffs for this initial effort are significant. By doing the terminology management well early on, you can ensure that the work is done once correctly and used often and as intended later on. This not only improves the quality and efficiency of translation, but also the branding of the company in the long run.

Translation Memory (TM)

Translation Memory is a key element in any successful translation company. By leveraging all previously translated material you can not only improve the quality and consistency of your content but also increase savings due to increased fuzzy matches. In a recent GALA article, What is Translation Memory?, they explained that “translation memory can cut costs and increase speed by 15-90%.” These savings are made possible by [reusing] past translations to improve translation productivity.”

Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools

CAT tools are a necessary element of any efficient translation or localization company. In the LinkedIn Pulse Article, The Importance of CAT Tools for Translation Quality, Fedja Imamovic explains that, “When the speed of a machine is combined with the human ability to adapt and interpret pieces of text we get a translator with a powerful tool that allows him to produce good quality translations in short periods of time.” CAT tools allow you to never have to repeat work that has previously been done and instead leverage and build upon all previous projects. CAT tools are an industry standard and should be taken advantage of. They are a valuable resource in translation and localization.

Translation Management System (TMS)

A recent article by GALA showed that investing in a translation management system (TMS) lowers cost of ownership, improves resource allocation, provides a greater integration that reduces inefficiency, and is a cost-efficient reuse of linguistic assets. Cloud-based TMS in particular was shown in their study to have a lower cost of ownership, which improves ROI, because “getting translation management on a subscription basis using Software as a Service (SaaS) means you don’t have any overhead, capital expenditures, or added expenses from storage space or electricity usage.” Translation Management Systems are so useful because they allow companies to aggregate all of their work. By being able to manage data, deadlines, and projects through a cloud-based system companies can aggregate many of the tools and processes in the translation process. The best TMS’s will allow you to combine many if not all of your translation resources into one location. For example, they will provide TB’s, TM’s, and CAT tools all within their translation management system. By streamlining this process and using a quality TMS companies can increase their ROI and peace of mind. Resolve this month to lay your foundation for success by evaluating your use of industry resources. Determine which translation tools you are capitalizing on and which you can introduce into your workflow. There is always room for improvement and implementing these tools will allow for future growth and improved quality of translations and products for your clients and market.
