Resolution #4 (April) — Get Involved

How Attending Industry Conferences and Forums Can Help Your Company

Spring cleaning can be for more than just your home. It’s also a must when it comes to your company’s business model and marketing process. One of the best ways to know what should stay and what should go when it comes to your company is by attending conferences and events in the localization and translation industry. By immersing your company into this world even further you expose yourself to the most up-to-date research, the newest technology, and many networking opportunities.

Just during April alone, there are 6 different international localization/translation events happening. On April 2-5 there is the MadWorld 2017 conference in San Diego, California. This event is primarily focused on technical communication and content strategy for international businesses. There is also the 1st World Congress on Translation Studies in Nanterre, France, the 12th EUATC International Conference in Berlin, Germany, and SpeechTEK 2017 in Washington, DC, USA. Another event is the 7th Annual CTA Conference in Boulder Colorado, USA which is open to language companies, translators, and interpreters and the Localization Management Round Table in Rosario, Argentina. The Localization Management Round Table is the perfect example of an event that can help you branch out and get involved in the localization world because its main purpose is to “create a channel of open communication for senior managers and owners of LSPs” in order to discuss the specific issues and nuances in localization management. By getting involved in these forums and events you will become educated in the state of the art localization technology and methodology that will help your company reach the next level professionally.

The benefits of sending members of your company to conferences aren't just limited to the growth of that individual person or their team but it extends also to the networking, new technology, and increased exposure for your company. When you send a representative(s) of your company to an event they will have the opportunity to listen to keynote speakers and lecturers who are some of the world’s leading experts in localization and translation, this alone will provide the information that can inspire your company to adapt and grow in some of the most efficient and beneficial ways. These lecturers also tend to share advice regarding businesses practices to avoid that can inform your company, allowing you to avoid the mistakes that others have already made. Networking is perhaps one of the most crucial skills and opportunities to take advantage of at a conference. Usually, each day will begin and end with networking sessions, with opportunities for activities to network and mingle also. These times are so beneficial because they provide you the opportunity to connect with other companies and vendors that share similar goals and visions as you. During this time you can not only present an impression of yourself and your company but you can also find a potential mentor or prospective providers or customers. Networking time during conferences is the perfect time to form new relationships or strengthen ones you already have. Along these lines, a conference is a perfect place to increase exposure to your company, whether you are a presenter, have a booth, or are simply an attendee you can proudly carry your company name anywhere you go and show others the great things you are doing. Conferences are the perfect time to build awareness of your company’s services and to present those in the best light. This is your time to shine and show others how much they can benefit by knowing you.

Whether you are a company that has attended industry events and conferences in the past, or if this is an entirely new field for you, it is in your best interest to see how you and your company can use these events more to your advantage. That may be by starting to send employees, inviting employees to report to their teams what they have learned at the conference, or you might want to begin having booths or speakers go to represent your companies at events. Regardless of your company’s level of conference experience, there is always something more you can do. This month resolve to get involved and use the various event opportunities around you to improve your company.
